Q: Can I replace my old underground storage tank with a new one?
A: Yes. However, the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) recommends that homeowners replace underground tanks with leak-proof aboveground models. Even though modern underground tanks are made of double-walled plastic and fiberglass so they won’t corrode, there’s still a chance leaks can develop in the piping if they are not properly installed. Either way, check with your local municipality for regulations regarding the replacement and/or decommission of underground tanks.

Q: What options do I have for testing my underground tank?
A: There are several test methods used today. Computerized sonic or ultrasound methods don’t put stress on the tank and are gaining in popularity. Pressure or vacuum tests are reliable, but they put stress on the tank and if improperly performed, can cause leaks. Another method is to test the soil around the tank. Soil borings are nonivasive and, in our area, tend to be less expensive than other test methods.

Q: Where should I put my new aboveground tank?
A: Because heating oil is biodegradable and safe to store inside our homes, you can put your new leak-proof safety tank in your basement, in a closet, in a garage or anywhere in your yard.

Q: What do I need to know about propane tank requirements?
A: While we can discuss this in complete detail when you ask us to install a tank for you, here are a few basic safety and compliance items you should be aware of.
| • |
A tank needs to contain a manufacturer’s nameplate or it cannot be filled. |
| • |
Propane tanks must be painted a reflective color. |
| • |
The propane regulator must be covered and protected or pointed vertically down. |
| • |
The tank must be placed above the soil on level ground. |
