Everyone is looking for ways to save — especially in this economy. This is probably why our home performance energy audit has become one of our most popular services.
Here are answers to common questions about this service.
Q: What does “home performance” mean?
A: Home performance is a term used to describe how effectively and efficiently your home uses energy for heating and cooling.
Home performance isn’t an isolated measure of one or two aspects of your home’s efficiency;
it is a “top-to-bottom” evaluation of your entire home as a system.
The process of improving home performance begins with a comprehensive home energy audit conducted by one of our specially trained energy advisors. The audit identifies areas of excessive energy consumption, as well as health and comfort issues — and the reasons for them — including things like air leaks, insufficient insulation, defective ducts or excess moisture.
Q: What do you look at when you do a home energy audit?
A: The first thing we do is interview you. Only you can tell us things like whether any rooms feel clammy when the a/c is on, or if any parts of the house need to be dusted more than others.
The next step is an inspection of your heating and cooling equipment. Our comfort consultant will visually inspect your equipment for signs of deterioration, improper installation or insufficient maintenance.
Next, we’ll conduct a blower door test, which will show us how much air is moving throughout the home vs. how much should be (based on the volume of the home). We use the results of the blower door test to set one of our goals for improving performance.
Finally, we’ll do a complete inspection of your insulation. After we finish the tests, we’ll explain the findings to you and give you a prioritized plan of recommended improvements.
Q: If the audit finds problems, how do I fix them?
A: Some items you can probably handle yourself, but others will require a professional. Don’t worry: if it is not something that we do, we can recommend a local expert you can trust to do the job. If you make the recommended improvements, you can expect to save a significant amount on your energy costs — in some cases, as much as 25%!
